Changing Business Requires Changing Language

30 July 2015 By LA Leave a Comment

A paradigm shift is defined as a fundamental change in approach or underlying assumptions. Let me give you few examples.paradigm shift

Wickless vs. Wicked

One of Scentsy’s product offerings are our wickless candles. That means there is no smoke, no wick, no flame and no soot. If you think about a traditional wicked candle, when the candle burns down and there is nothing left, you would not expect the candle to keep scenting your home.  Yet with a wickless candle because only the fragrance oil evaporates and the wax does not, new customers tend to think their wickless candle should scent their area longer.

However if they had a votive candle which burned for 8 hours and then was gone, that’d be expected. Yet a wickless candle warming for 24 hours should still have the same scent as when first melted (in their minds).  However that’s not how wickless candles work. This is a situation that requires a paradigm shift.

Over time, when the wickless concept is no longer new to anyone, there should no longer be the misunderstanding of how long wickless scents last. For now, it’s a matter of patience and education to create the shift.  Some experts suggest it can take ten or more years to complete a paradigm shift.

Professional Pay Isn’t Available If You Look Like a Hobbyist

27 April 2015 By LA Leave a Comment

“If you want to earn professional pay you need to do professional work.” – Orville Thompson, Fmr Direct Selling Association Chairman

direct sales quotesHuman Resources professionals give interview advice to dress for the part you want. The same holds true for your direct sales business as it relates to your marketing collateral.  Your business cards, flyers and brochures would be the equivalent of you dressing for the part you want.

The best way to ensure your new direct selling business never gets off the ground is to create your own marketing material. There are exceptions to every rule and I have seen some very professional looking home made business cards, fliers, brochures, etc. Yet those rare cases are not the norm.  For the most part, homemade marketing collateral screams amateur and hobbyist.

Conversely the marketing materials your direct sales parent company provides are valuable tools available for independent consultants.  Use the professional design and printing to portray an image of professionalism. Poor marketing causes more damage than no marketing at all, so take advantage of the pre-designed marketing material provided by your home office. I’m Calling False Advertising on That One!

15 August 2014 By LA Leave a Comment

What happened to authentic marketing in direct sales?

false advertising in direct salesWait, before you throw rotten tomatoes at me, I absolutely know much of direct sales advertising and marketing IS accurate and authentic. If you are ethically representing your company then you’re doing the right thing and I’m not referring to you.

What I’m referring to are the rogue independent consultants who are promoting the benefits of their products online so as to reflect a more positive experience than what may be the actual situation.  I tend to see it more often with consultants who represent a product line specific to health and beauty.

I’m not going to call anyone out; those who do it know who they are. And if they think they’re getting one over on us, it’s only temporary for those who fall for it. Once they shell out hard earned money and find they are not getting the results you showed then you’ve lost a customer and gained more bad press.

I’m Calling BS

Allow me to give an example of what I have been seeing more and more of lately. A consultant representing “Company X” claims she has a product that will drastically grow hair on your head. She even shows her own results in a before and after photo of how much her lovely locks grew in just two short weeks. It’s amazing I tell ya! It’s practically unheard of! NOW You Want to Sell Your Stuff?

19 July 2014 By LA Leave a Comment

help for direct sellersEverything Must Go? You should have had that attitude before going out of business.

On a somewhat regular basis I see Facebook posts from consultants wanting to get rid of their on-hand inventory because they’re going out of business. Some have been terminated because they didn’t sell the minimum required. Yet others quit because they buy inventory but then don’t sell it to customers, so they end up with a closet full of it.

Direct Sales is a business where you EARN money, not one that should be too expensive to keep.

What baffles me is all the scrambling and jockeying that goes on to get others to buy their products when they decide they no longer want to sell. If they had that same drive and passion while they were still independent direct sales consultants, they would be realizing amazing success.

Perhaps if you are also one who is struggling to sell the amount of product you want or need to, just pretend you are going out of business – and start busting a move to get it in the hands of those who will pay you for it.

See you at the top!
