What Kind of Wax Does Scentsy Use?

What Kind of Wax Does Scentsy Use in Candle Bars?

In answer to the frequently asked question, “What Kind of Wax does Scentsy use?” the following was response below provided by Scentsy Co-Owner and CEO, Orville Thompson. It first appeared in February 2006, and still holds true today.

Many customers have asked about the wax we [Scentsy] use and why. Here is the scoop.  We use a food-grade petroleum [paraffin] based wax. We chose this wax because of its superior scent loading ability, melt point and firmness.  We looked into vegetable based waxes, and we just couldn’t get a quality candle bar.

The issue of vegetable vs. petroleum [paraffin] waxes is raised primarily by vegetable wax candle makers because of the health risks associated with burning petroleum waxes.

Most of the scientific research I have read (as opposed to sales literature) suggests that there are plenty of health issues with burning candles of any type of wax. Switching to vegetable based waxes does not seem to reduce the health risks as much as the veggie wax people would like us to believe. The Scentsy solution is simply not to burn the wax. The wax is not burned, and therefore, not released into the air to pollute our lungs, walls and furniture.

The issue of the type of wax we use is a non-issue, with regard to the chemicals released while burning, because we only warm the scent out of the wax – the wax remains in the warmer. If customers have a question about what kind of wax we use, I always ask them why they ask.

This is because any answer other than “˜soy’ or “˜vegetable’ will put off anyone who is predisposed to using to using only vegetable wax, even if the logic explained later is sound. If they respond by saying they only use vegetable wax candles, or are asking out of simple curiosity, you can explain the Scentsy solution and how it is better than burning any kind of wax which put our products in the proper and positive light.

To put it simply, I would rather have petroleum wax in a warmer than a soy wax dispersed into the air of my home. Let wicked candle makers fight over relative safety. With Scentsy we practice “safer scents” – we abstain from wicks.

Now that you have a better understanding of what kind of wax Scentsy uses, and why, pick out your favorite scents here.

Is Your Scentsy Business in a Funk?

20 August 2015 By LA 2 Comments

Is your direct sales business in a funk?Is Your Scentsy Business in a Funk?

Ever hear a fellow consultant say, “I’m in a funk”?

I think we all get the idea of what that means when we hear it.  Basically that something isn’t quite right; nothing seems to be going well; in a slump, right?

Songwriter Steven Greenburg wrote the popular “Funkytown” when he became bored with Minneapolis and wanted to move to New York.   Some of the lyrics go: Well, I talk about it, Talk about it, Talk about it, Talk about it, Talk about, Talk about Talk about movin…” If you don’t remember that song – ask your parents!

Sound Familiar?

When consultants say they nothing is working, it  reminds me of Funkytown. I have had conversations similar to that below more than a few times over the years:

Downline:   Help! Help! I’m in a funk
Me:   Okay, tell me what you’ve been doing that isn’t working
DL:   I can’t get any parties booked and my sales are really down
Me:   What are you saying to potential hosts?
DL:   “Do you want to have a party for me?”

Then we go into a conversation about how hosts don’t do consultants favors.   The consultant has a fabulous product he or she wants to share and give others the opportunity to earn free items.   Actually the consultant is doing the host a favor. It’s an important change in mindset.

Me:   What else are you doing for your business?
DL:   I’ve talked to everyone I know.
Me: What have you said?
DL:   Everyone is broke.

Notice a pattern of evading my questions?

Me:   Have you called your past customers and hosts recently?
DL:   I sent a text.
Me:   Have you called your past customers and hosts recently? Just let them know what the current specials are and tell them that you’re placing an order and ask if you can them anything.
DL:   Oh.

Then months go by and the same consultant contacts me again:

Downline:   Help! Help! I’m in a funk
Me:   Okay, tell me what you’ve been doing that isn’t working since we last spoke.
DL:   I’ve done everything you said and nothing works.
Me:   Oh my! Everything?   Do you meet your goal of talking to three new people a day and give them a sample and catalog?   Have you called all of your past hosts and customers?   Have you asked everyone you know, including family and friends for referrals?   Not for sales, but for referrals – either someone who likes candles or who may be interested in earning some extra income?

Still Me: Have some you done sample test mailings with your catalogs and samples?   How many business cards have you given out this month?   Have you blogged regularly? How about writing some articles?   Did you read any books on search engine optimization?   Are you contributing to social networking such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, Snapchat, Tumblr, Instagram, LinkedIn and others?

Still Me: Have you created or outsourced the design for an external website?   Did you try to get incoming links? Is the text on your replicated website current?   Have you approached businesses about setting up a display? Have you located and participated in any Vendor Events?   Have you attended any of the telecons, webinars or meetings?   Are you planning to go to convention or the regional training?   Do you have a decal or magnet on your car?   Have you approached any organizations about doing a fundraisers?   Have you done any target marketing?   Have you defined your niche?   Have you considered your unique selling proposition? Have you created any videos, slideshows or podcasts?

Yup, Still Me: Do you carry your products and recruiting information with you everywhere you go? Either in your purse or available in the vehicle? Have you offered any contest prizes or donations to anyone?   How many samples have you handed out this month?   How much time a week do you spend on your business? Have you phoned anyone within the last three months for help or accountability?   Have you written down your short and long term goals?   Do you have a vision board? Are you working just your immediate geographic area or are you going nationwide and international in your effort?   Have you reread the manual and listened to all of the available training modules?

Mercy, you’ve done ALL OF THAT, and you’re still in a funk? Eek.  Have you considered that perhaps Direct Sales isn’t for you if you’ve done everything listed above and still can’t get one sale?

Reality Check

Okay, yes perhaps there is a little sarcasm there and no, I would never barrage a downline member like that. Well not all at once anyway! And I’d do it nicely while offering support.

I think you get the point. If your business truly is in a funk, try some of the suggestions above.   You should be able to see some improvement.   Or if you keep saying that “you’re in a funk” but cannot honestly say that you’ve done EVERYTHING, then it’s time to step out of your comfort zone and get out of Funkytown!

Don’t just talk about it, Talk about it, Talk about it, Talk about it, Talk about, Talk about Talk about movin“¦   Instead actually GET Movin!

Professional Pay Isn’t Available If You Look Like a Hobbyist

27 April 2015 By LA Leave a Comment

“If you want to earn professional pay you need to do professional work.” – Orville Thompson, Fmr Direct Selling Association Chairman

direct sales quotesHuman Resources professionals give interview advice to dress for the part you want. The same holds true for your direct sales business as it relates to your marketing collateral.  Your business cards, flyers and brochures would be the equivalent of you dressing for the part you want.

The best way to ensure your new direct selling business never gets off the ground is to create your own marketing material. There are exceptions to every rule and I have seen some very professional looking home made business cards, fliers, brochures, etc. Yet those rare cases are not the norm.  For the most part, homemade marketing collateral screams amateur and hobbyist.

Conversely the marketing materials your direct sales parent company provides are valuable tools available for independent consultants.  Use the professional design and printing to portray an image of professionalism. Poor marketing causes more damage than no marketing at all, so take advantage of the pre-designed marketing material provided by your home office. Tips if You’re Struggling With Summer Sales

18 July 2014 By LA Leave a Comment

slow summer salesIt’s middle of July and your Scentsy sales volumes are down. That’s not uncommon. So what do you do about it?

Whatever you do, do not – repeat: do not take the summer off from your direct sales   business. If you have taken the first half of summer off, then break is over.

It is true things do tend to slow down a bit during summer months, but that is all the more reason to make sure you keep working your business.   Otherwise you will have a non-existent paycheck during the summer months and your fall sales will not be set up to succeed.

Ready to quit?

Worst yet, if you’re feeling frustrated and are ready to throw in the towel, quitting in the summer is a horrible idea. Why? Because the slower summer signifies that the crazy, hoppin’ busy, holiday season is right around the corner. Many direct sales companies do over 50% of their business in the last three months of the year.

It’s like an accountant complaining there aren’t any/many taxes to prepare in May. Right…. it’s not tax season, that’s why some only work seasonal or they find other bookkeeping gigs to keep some income coming in during the off season. But it’s not realistic to decide to “quit” because they don’t have enough 1040s to file in the summer!

What to do about slow summer sales

Below are some summer suggestions from experienced direct sellers to help get you through the lean months. [Read more…] about Tips if You’re Struggling With Summer Sales

Keep Your Friends Close and Your Competitors Closer

1 March 2014 By LA Leave a Comment

tips to get more salesThere’s a familiar quote attributed to Chinese general and military strategist, Sun-tzu: “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.” If you know your enemies, and you know what they are up to, you can keep a close eye on them. If you are unaware of their activities that makes them unpredictable.

The same is true your direct sales competitors. One way to increase your business is to take existing ideas and put your own spin on them. By the way, there are no new ideas, just reworked ones.

Who are your competitors?

Some consultants believe other companies that sell similar products are their competitors. Could be. Others believe that their product line is unique enough to set them apart from other companies therefore their true competitors are other consultants within the same company. Remember competitor doesn’t mean enemy or unethical business owner, merely one who is after the same business you are.

Regardless of your definition, if you have a business you are working, then you are in competition with everyone else who has a similar business. To find new customers and potential team members, investigate what your competitors are doing. There is nothing illegal or unethical about evaluating how a competitor markets her product or business opportunity. [Read more…] about Keep Your Friends Close and Your Competitors Closer
