Direct Sales Supplements Retirement Income

ways to supplement retirement incomeStarting a direct sales business is a great way to supplement your retirement income. You will still have the freedom to set your own hours as you do now in retirement; and you can work at much or as little as you choose.

Whether your pension or Social Security income isn’t enough to keep you comfortable, or you need extra income to travel more or pay for medications, or your sweet significant other is driving you crazy and you need to get out of the home for a bit – direct sales can help you enjoy your golden years.

Control How Much You Earn

If you’re worried that if you earn too much it’ll negatively affect your benefits, you have 100% control of how much you earn. If you choose just to sell products (as opposed to also building a sales team) then you’ll know up front how much you will earn.   For example, with Scentsy, consultants earn 20-30% commission on personal sales. If you sell $2,000 in one calendar month, you know you’ll earn $600. You can use that as a guide what you need to earn or what amount you cannot go over.

If you opt to build a team you can earn much more. You can also control how many team members you recruit and what months you get paid on downline sales. That’s the beauty of direct sales, you are in control of your income. You will get out of it what you put into it.

How to Get Started

  1. Find a product line you would like to represent – whether it’s candles, handbags, chocolate, jewelry, kitchen products or something else you would enjoy representing.
  2. Research leaders within the company and find a consultant under which to enroll. This person will be your mentor so choose wisely as most companies do not allow you to change sponsors once you enroll. See Selecting Direct Sales Sponsor.
  3. Join / Enroll / Sign up / Start a Business – it all means the same thing in direct sales. It means you’re paying a small investment for a starter kit which should provide you product samples and supplies needed to start your business. See Scentsy starter kit contents here.
  4. Have fun. If you’re retired, you already paid your dues. Odds are you didn’t necessarily enjoy every single day you worked. Now is the time to find something that would be fun to do and supplement your retirement income at the same time.

Preconceived Notions

If you’re concerned Direct Sales means conducting home parties, relax. Demonstrating the products via home parties certainly is a great platform to share in a fun environment, but it is not the only way. Perhaps you’d prefer to do vendor events or catalog/basket parties, or set up displays in businesses or do some online parties or fundraisers.   Check with your sponsor; it’s likely the company you join offers you the ability to sell using more methods than just home parties.
