Quickest Way to Get Me to Unfollow You on Twitter

25 July 2013 By LA Leave a Comment

I love Twitter. I use it daily. I’ve learned some amazing tidbits and met some fabulous people. I highly, highly, encourage direct sellers to jump on the Twitter bandwagon. In fact, come follow me @directsalesblog, then come back and finish this article.

This is not a post about the benefits of using Twitter, nor how to get followers; and it’s not a post about the content of what you tweet. There are plenty of resources about that and that is an entirely different conversation.

Instead I want to talk about:

The Quickest Way to Get Me to Unfollow You on Twitter

DMs – Direct Messages are great opportunity to start a conversation in private. It’s a great platform to start building personal relationships or to say something that the entire Twitterverse doesn’t need to be bogged down with.

Note I mention words like conversation (indicating two-way), and personal and relationships.

What bugs the beegeebers out of me are Tweeps using the DM to spam me. If I have decided to follow you because you look interesting or whatever reason, and then you almost instantly send me a DM sending me to your FB page or website or to buy your book, then you’re spamming me. And I will instantly go unfollow you. You have your settings set up to autoreply with your ad. [Read more…] about Quickest Way to Get Me to Unfollow You on Twitter

Can’t Afford Not to Stay a Consultant

25 July 2013 By LA Leave a Comment

circleEvery time consultants are up for termination due to inactivity I hear it: “I can’t afford to keep my [xyz direct sales] business, so I’m going to quit or I’m going to be terminated.”

I don’t understand that logic.

If you are struggling financially, and you already own a direct sales business, and also have access to great products that you can share and sell “¦ and earn money by doing so – why would you quit that? Isn’t that the answer to prayer? Isn’t this a solution to help you out financially? A few more crazy comments I hear:

“My husband doesn’t get paid until Friday.”

Not sure what a spouse’s payday has to do with your ability to pick up the phone and make some sales to save your account – unless of course the phone has been shut off due to failure to pay the bill. Then I’d high tail it to the public library to use the free internet. That way you can send emails and set up an online party. Then you can save your business and then continue so sell so that you can pay the phone bill.

Two of your favorites: Scentsy and Saving Money can be combined into one great experience. As long as you’re already stocking up on your favorite fragrant scented candles, soaps, lotions, laundry products and air fresheners you might as well order more than one to get a discount.

Why do you think warehouse clubs like Costco and Sam’s Club are so popular? You can purchase in bulk for much less than you can buying individual packages at your neighborhood grocery store. You don’t even need an oversized shopping cart, nor do you have to box up your own purchases with Scentsy. The friendly UPS driver will deliver it right to your door.

Just a few examples of Scentsy savings:

Scented candle bars:   Buy five, get one free

Christmas in July

Christmas Planning in July

Whenever you hear people mention Christmas in July, they’re frequently referring to having a big sale in the summer to buy or sell some Christmas items at a great price. It’s hard for people to think that far ahead; let alone fork over money even if it is a good bargain. It’s vacation season and close to back to school time.

Instead of thinking of sales in July, think of planning in July.christmas in july

If you haven’t already done so, now is the time as a direct seller you should be setting up your Christmas season.

  • Are there vendor events you need to schedule? Sometimes those book a year in advance but there still may be some you can get into.
  • Will you be advertising in a gift giving guide?
  • Are you going to host a customer appreciation event or special offer?
  • Plan a cash and carry event and offer festive snacks and free gift wrapping.
  • Fill your calendar. Hosts like free and half off items too to help with their gift giving.
  • Heavily recruit new team members who need money for gifts or who want to buy from themselves.

Direct sales is a business that you have to balance always looking and planning forward and not sacrificing the current month.   It’s also a business that is sometimes a bit slower in the summer so it’s the perfect time to set up your holiday season.

Christmas in July – tis the season!

See you at the top!

Independent Consultant or Dependent Consultant?

21 July 2013 By LA Leave a Comment

reading_womanBeing in direct sales twenty five years, I like to say that nothing ceases to amaze me. Yet I still continue to see things that make me scratch my head and no-so-silently utter, “wow.”

If you’re in direct sales, it’s likely you are titled an Independent Consultant (or Representative or Distributor or Manager or Director). Synonyms for independent are “self-contained” and “self-sufficient”.

I’ve been accused of being harsh because I expect independent consultants to be independent. I’m certainly here to mentor and help and support. I enjoy helping others build their businesses. Keywords are help and support. That doesn’t mean I do it for them. Remember the adage about teaching a man to fish?

The Other Message

I found a Facebook message waiting for me in my Other folder this morning: “All I get are emails from you (which by the way, I only send when I have with helpful information to pass along or that may benefit team member’s businesses). I need help. That team Facebook page isn’t any help (yes it is if she’d read it). The Training Center isn’t any help (it’s loaded with every topic imaginable in a variety of platforms – audio, video, text, etc.) and the Resource section isn’t helpful (documents up the wazoo) and either is that book that came in my starter kit. (She’s referring to the step-by-step start up guide).  I need help.”

Hmm. Okay. Do I really need add any additional commentary here? I merely responded “What specific questions do you have?”   I have yet to hear back. Then I started thinking about all the quotes, phrases, saying about initiative and helping yourself. Here are just a few that came to mind: [Read more…] about Independent Consultant or Dependent Consultant?
