Do Your Neighbors Know What You Sell?

6 July 2013 By LA Leave a Comment

partiesI heard a sad direct sales story recently.   A consultant was invited to a home party by one of her neighbors. She was hosting a party for all her friends, relatives and neighbors. It was going to be a big bash and fun time. The consultant felt ill when she learned her neighbor was hosting a party for the same company that the she represented. The consultant who was going to be facilitating the party was not even on the consultant’s team.

When the consultant told the neighbor that she too sold for the same company, the neighbor looked perplexed and said, “Oh. Did you just start?”   The consultant hung her head in shame and mumbled that she had been a consultant with that company for almost five years!

WHY DIDN’T THE NEIGHBOR KNOW THAT?

To make matters worse, the night of the party there were cars lined all up and down the street. Some even parked in front of the consultant’s house. The consultant listened to the guests having fun outside by her neighbor’s pool. There were laughing, and playing games and having a great time.

THE RIPPLE EFFECT

It doesn’t end there.   A few days later the neighbor saw the consultant outside by the mail box and asked her why she didn’t come over to the [Read more…] about Do Your Neighbors Know What You Sell?

Networking With Your Target Market

3 April 2013 By LA Leave a Comment

Ok, so once you select your target market – then what?

Go where “they” are.   If it’s young moms, look for play groups.   If it’s working moms, look for day care centers.   If it’s college students, go on campus and to cafes around campus.   If it’s business executives, look for chamber of commerce meetings, BNI groups, after hours networking events, or Toastmaster groups.   Perhaps your target market may be disgruntled current WAHMs looking for a change in venue; vendor events might be a good place to find them.   If it’s seniors, you may find them at senior communities or at the gym.

Then next is very important.   Do not go to your target market looking to sell.   No, no, no.   Let me repeat that.   Do not go to your target market looking to sell your ware. Instead go with the intent of building relationships.

What is one thing that people, most all people, like to do most? [Read more…] about Networking With Your Target Market

Are Manners and Common Courtesy Obsolete?

24 March 2013 By LA 1 Comment

Attitude of GratitudeTwo words – “Okay, thanks” or another derivative “Thank you.”   Why is it so difficult for some people to use those two words?

When you let someone cut in during a traffic jam, don’t you expect the other driver to give you “the wave”?   It’s the universal “Thank You” signal from driver to driver.   I don’t mind letting cars in once in a while – as I believe in that whole karma thing.   But admittedly, I’ve heard myself utter “The wave. You’re supposed to do the wave.” if I happen to let a car sneak in front of me and I don’t get “the wave.”   They’re just supposed to say “Thank You.”

Likewise if someone takes a moment to hold the door open for you – it’s assumed that you will utter “thank you” to the person who just took 8 seconds out of his or her day to ensure the door was not shut in your face.

The same goes for online etiquette.   Why is it so difficult for some people to email you back after you provide a response to say, “Thank you” or “Okay, thanks.”   I agree there comes a point where the email banter needs to come to a conclusion – thank you, no thank You, no really, thank You – that is a bit redundant. Are You Spending Your Online Time Wisely?

28 February 2013 By LA 2 Comments

Social media. Social networking. Forums. Facebook. Twitter. Pinterest. LinkedIn. Tumblr. Google+ and countless other online websites give you plenty of opportunity to be social. Connecting with others online opens up so many possibilities and opportunities for independent business owners and direct sales consultants.

Online networking has a plethora of positive aspects to it, if done properly.   It can also be detrimental to your business if you are spending an abundance of time online, all in the name of “˜networking’ but actually, all you are doing is chitchatting.   True that in order to be successful online, building a rapport and reputation are key, but just who are you taking to and can it help build your own business?

To illustrate this point – consider the direct sales consultant who hangs out at their company forum.   Companywide forums, where all consultants, from all teams gather to ask questions and share ideas can be a big help to some, especially if they feel they are not getting the support they need from their own upline.   But is spending hours each day chatting with other consultants who are not even on your team giving you the return on your time investment? When Opportunity Knocks Open the Door

9 January 2013 By LA Leave a Comment

open_doorNew direct sales consultants often ask how to approach people about their business opportunity or products. They tend to either say absolutely nothing, out of fear of rejection – or they come off like a bull in a china shop and approach the subject way too forcefully.

It is important to find your own style. Do not worry about following a particular script. Speak from the heart why you like the products or why you joined and why you think the person talking with you may also be interested in what you are offering.

The very best way to share your direct sales business is to allow conversations to happen naturally. You have to actively listen for opportunities to have a conversation. When you get the chance to share, do not let it pass you by. Below is an example of a naturally occurring opportunity that knocked this week, and I opened the door.

I had a doctor’s appointment. When I arrived at the office no one was there. It was a schedule mix up (on their part, not mine).   Twenty five minutes later the doctor and the other staff members arrived. They were at their other office. They immediately diffused the situation by apologizing profusely. Sincere apologies go a long way.

When the doctor entered the room he again apologized. Here is how the conversation went:

MD:   Again, I am terribly sorry for keeping you waiting. I hope this isn’t causing you trouble at work.

Me: I’m the boss, so I can be flexible.

MD: The boss? Oh! What do you do?

Me: I have a candle business. [Read more…] about When Opportunity Knocks Open the Door
