Are You Part of the Problem or the Solution?

Mom always said “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.” Sound advice? I tend to think so. With Facebook, Twitter and other public forums, it sure makes it easy for some to ignore my mama’s advice.

What I find interesting is what some consider a gripe, bitch, vent, complaint, or whine. For example – it’s no secret that I’m not overly fluffy in my speech. I’m very direct, don’t mince words and am sometimes unfiltered. Because I don’t often give sugary, sweet, lovey dovey comments, I’m accused of ignoring my mom’s advice. I’m frequently charged with being mean or not nice. I certainly beg to differ, but those who prefer a softer, gentler, delivery will continue to believe what they believe.

However, having a less than confectionery delivery is not the same as griping, bitching, venting, complaining or whining. I am referring to the people who feel it necessary to come into a public forum and spew negativity.   I’m sure it is a widespread problem, no matter what network or forum you frequent. I happen to see it most often in direct sales team forums.

Team and company forums are typically set up for independent sales consultants to network with each other, share ideas, ask questions and help fellow team members. For the most part they are a fabulous platform for this type of support and information sharing. The benefits outweigh the negatives. Yet still, some feel they need to come in with their cyber-courage and act as a wet blanket for all the good that is trying to be maintained in that environment. Is Anyone Reading Your Ad?

In the late 1970’s there was a TV game show called “Card Sharks.” In the game, the contestants predicted whether each card was higher or lower than the one that preceded it. Before they could start calling higher or lower on the cards, they had to answer a high/low toss-up question. If you’re old enough to recall this game, you’ll remember the insane monkey behavior of the grown adults as they kept shouting HIGHER! HIGHER! LOWER! LOWER!

I have had numerous opportunities to emulate these primates when it comes to discussing how to write a great business ad to post on networks and forums. “LOWER! LOWER!” I repeatedly shout, yet my thumbs down utterances seem to go unheard. What I’m referring to is the optimum number of words in a sales pitch.

Specifically, if you participate in networks, perhaps Facebook, LinkedIn, Ning, Yahoogroups, WAHM.com, or a plethora of others out there – depending on group rules, you may have an opportunity to promote your own business on certain days. It’s your opportunity to toot your own horn and share specials offers etc. Got the picture? For years, and I mean years, we have talked about what makes a good ad. Direct Sales Lessons Learned from Mama Robin

Mama Robin is a bird; not a person but she is still teaching me about my direct sales business.

Last week my daughter pointed out that we had a bird’s nest on the top of our front porch light. How that happened so quickly I have no clue because we use that door daily and that light frequently. You’d think we would have noticed as the nest was under construction.   I used a mirror to see if there were any eggs in it. There were not. But we decided to just leave it alone for a few days to see if it would be used, after all, someone went to a great deal of work building it.

Sure enough within a day or so, the nest has eggs in it and most all day and night there is a beautiful robin who sits atop her babies.   I try to use the side door as much as possible as I don’t want to disturb our little mama robin.   Though any time someone gets anywhere near the walk way she frantically flies away onto the garden swing nearby so she can keep a close watch on her eggs.

My Trip to the Scentsy Lexington Distribution Center

I had the opportunity to visit the Scentsy Wickless Distribution Center last week. I was always impressed with the speed and accuracy this facility fulfills the individual and party orders submitted by customers and independent consultants but I now have a whole new appreciation for the process and the employees.

I’m not even sure I can explain what I saw and do it justice.   It is a very complex system that runs like a well oiled machine. It’s very systematic and full of checks and balances along the way to ensure accuracy.   Just as each individual independent Scentsy consultant is an essential piece in the entire team puzzle, each employee plays a vital role in fulfilling our orders.

Thinking of some of the employees who touch each order:

  • The person who prints off the orders and organizes them for fulfillment
  • The person who hand-picks the candle bars, sets them on the cart and then forwards the cart to the next zone
  • The person(s) who continue to hand pick each item from the shelves until all product items are on the cart
  • The person who labels and scans the inventory then packs the boxes
  • The person who gets the box on the UPS tractor trailer

You Can’t Be Successful Working Two Direct Sales Companies

Successful Scentsy Superstar DirectorIf you’re working more than one direct sales business you’re sending an ugly message.

“Join my team! This company is fabulous!” Well, it’s not THAT fabulous, because I have to work ANOTHER business to make more money.   That’s the message you send if you’re trying to promote the benefits of joining a particular business but you’re not devoted to that businesses.

The most common justification I hear for this is “I like to offer a variety of products.” Or “I’m just doing this other one to supplement my income.” Okay, but you’re hurting your credibility and you’re hurting your business. Also, before the hate mail comes in, I realize that the word “successful” is very subjective. I am referring to those who claim they want to earn a full time income, and even say those words, but their actions say otherwise.

Diluted Credibility

You’re not doing well with Company A, so add Company B. Now Company A will do even less because your attentions are divided or focused on Company B.   How can you possibly think joining Company B will do anything to help your Company A?

Also, if Company B is so wonderful, why are you still doing Company A?   You are sending mixed signals and you’re sending an ugly message about both. You’re talking out of both sides of your mouth if you’re trying to convince people that you’re dedicated to one company but your actions clearly show you aren’t.   You will never fully recognize true success with either if you’re trying to juggle both. Additionally, how selfish and unfair is that to your downline with Company A that you’re not fully supporting and coaching?
