Wow, That’s a Pretty Rude Title, Don’t You Think?
How do you feel about:
- Your lips are moving but all I hear is blah, blah, blah
- She sounds like Charlie Brown’s teacher
- Does this look like a face that cares?
- I’m sorry, you’ve obviously mistaken me for someone who gives a rip
- Here we go again, someone please poke me in the eye with a fork
- Oh for the love of Peter, make it stop
- The world does not revolve around you
- Perhaps some cheese with that whine?
- Just put me out of my misery, now!
I can’t imagine too many people would be thrilled if someone actually said those things to them, though I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but people have likely thought those things about you.
Who is the You I’m referring to here?
I don’t know. Is it You? Do you know someone this could be written for? Oh gosh, could it be directed at You? Are you feeling guilty or paranoid? Do you think I could be talking about you? Are you searching your last conversations to see if this applies to you?
For the record, this is not directed at any one person, and it’s not even directed toward anyone specific I have in mind. But rather it’s directed toward a group of people, in general. We all know who they are in our lives; and some of you may not even realize you are the ones who do this.
The ones who do what?
Oh I think we have a good idea what I’m talking about. The people who never seem to shut up. They’re either talking about how wonderful they are, or how miserable they are, or how fantabulous their children are, or trivial information that does not enrich your life. They can’t stop talking about self, and even when no one asks, they feel the need to broadcast their personal business like a sneeze that lands on unsuspecting victims.
If Your Business Is Not Going As Well As You Hoped
Perhaps now is a good time for all to pause for a moment of silence to look deep inside ourselves to see if we may be doing that to others. You certainly don’t need to admit it to me, or to anyone for that matter. If your business is not going as well as you hoped, this could be one reason why.
If you are a sponsor, do you think your recruits or potential recruits could be thinking this about you? If you’re a director, is it possible some of your team members think this about you? If you are a consultant, any chance your customers or potential customers could be having these conversations in their own head as you speak to them?
I know, it’s a hard pill to swallow.
The truth may be ugly, but it’s still the truth. People don’t want to hear about you or stories of your personal successes – especially in business. Sure people love to talk about themselves or their children or their ailments or successes, but
Don’t misunderstand what I just said. People will do business with those they know, trust, or who are a referral. In order for that to happen you do have to open up a bit and let them get to know you a little. Show your personality, but that’s not what I”m talking about here, and I think we can all distinguish the difference.
You should be asking questions of them. You want them to talk so you can hear what they need and then determine how you can benefit them. It’s more than just a cliche – the fact that we have only one mouth and two ears. If you’re building your business, or trying to, do yourself a favor and only talk about yourself, your troubles or your successes if someone specifically asks, and even then keep it brief.
If one person asks you a direct question about yourself, you don’t need to post it or tweet it for all to see; feel free to directly PM or DM only the inquisitive ones. (I’ve personally unfollowed, unfriended and hid more people for this very reason).
Because really, if they didn’t ask, they likely don’t care.
