Do Your Neighbors Know What You Sell?
I heard a sad direct sales story recently. A consultant was invited to a home party by one of her neighbors. She was hosting a party for all her friends, relatives and neighbors. It was going to be a big bash and fun time. The consultant felt ill when she learned her neighbor was hosting a party for the same company that the she represented. The consultant who was going to be facilitating the party was not even on the consultant’s team.
When the consultant told the neighbor that she too sold for the same company, the neighbor looked perplexed and said, “Oh. Did you just start?” The consultant hung her head in shame and mumbled that she had been a consultant with that company for almost five years!
WHY DIDN’T THE NEIGHBOR KNOW THAT?
To make matters worse, the night of the party there were cars lined all up and down the street. Some even parked in front of the consultant’s house. The consultant listened to the guests having fun outside by her neighbor’s pool. There were laughing, and playing games and having a great time.
THE RIPPLE EFFECT
It doesn’t end there. A few days later the neighbor saw the consultant outside by the mail box and asked her why she didn’t come over to the party as it was a really good time. The neighbor went on to explain all the products she received for free that night because her friends bought over $1,000 worth of stuff. She would continue to get more because a couple of her other neighbors booked a party with that consultant who was there doing the party that night. And she was thinking about signing up to sell it herself since everyone who was there loved almost everything in the catalog.
Can you even imagine the sick feeling the consultant had listening to all that? Not only did she miss out on a $1,000+ party and the commissions that go with it, but she missed out on the future parties her neighbors will have. She could possibly even have a competing team literally in her back yard.
ALL BECAUSE SHE NEVER SHARED HER BUSINESS WITH OTHERS
I’m pretty sure I don’t need to conclude with the moral of the story as it should be quite obvious. Do your neighbors know what you sell? If not, what actions are going to take immediately to change that?
