Direct Sales Lessons Learned from Mama Robin
Mama Robin is a bird; not a person but she is still teaching me about my direct sales business.
Last week my daughter pointed out that we had a bird’s nest on the top of our front porch light. How that happened so quickly I have no clue because we use that door daily and that light frequently. You’d think we would have noticed as the nest was under construction. I used a mirror to see if there were any eggs in it. There were not. But we decided to just leave it alone for a few days to see if it would be used, after all, someone went to a great deal of work building it.
Sure enough within a day or so, the nest has eggs in it and most all day and night there is a beautiful robin who sits atop her babies. I try to use the side door as much as possible as I don’t want to disturb our little mama robin. Though any time someone gets anywhere near the walk way she frantically flies away onto the garden swing nearby so she can keep a close watch on her eggs.
Then I started thinking about how I could relate this little occurrence to my direct sales business. Continue reading
Are You Warm and Welcoming?
When you are in a host’s home to facilitate a party, are you warm and welcoming to the guests? Or do you usually hang back out of the way or go the opposite direction and end up a little over bearing?
One of the best pieces of advice I give new consultants when they start with a home party company is to “make it your own.” This is contrary to the 1980’s MLM mentality of keeping everything simple and duplicatable. I’m all for simple; but emphatically disagree with duplicating some other consultant’s style. You’ll enjoy your direct selling business much more and realize more success if you are comfortable what you’re doing and if you customize it to your own style.
It would be pious of me or anyone else to give you a script of what you should say. In the sales industry it’s been proven time and time again that people will buy from those they know or who are comfortable with. If you’re reading note cards or trying to regurgitate the words that another consultant uses, and it’s not necessarily how you would do it, it’ll come off cold and awkward at best.
As with many areas in life, it’s important that you find a balance. As a new consultant, it may take you a few tries to work the kinks out and get more comfortable. Here are some suggestions that may help as you get your sea legs in your direct sales business. Continue reading
You Can’t Be Successful Working Two Direct Sales Companies
If you’re working more than one direct sales business you’re sending an ugly message.
“Join my team! This company is fabulous!” Well, it’s not THAT fabulous, because I have to work ANOTHER business to make more money. That’s the message you send if you’re trying to promote the benefits of joining a particular business but you’re not devoted to that businesses.
The most common justification I hear for this is “I like to offer a variety of products.” Or “I’m just doing this other one to supplement my income.” Ok, but you’re hurting your credibility and you’re hurting your business. Also, before the hate mail comes in, I realize that the word “successful” is very subjective. I am referring to those who want to earn a full time income, and say those words, but their actions say otherwise.
Diluted Credibility
You’re not doing well with Company A, so add Company B. Now Company A will do even less because your attentions are divided or focused on Company B. How can you possibly think joining Company B will do anything to help your Co. A?
Also, if Company B is so wonderful, why are you still doing Company A? You are sending mixed signals and you’re sending an ugly message about both. You’re talking out of both sides of your mouth if you’re trying to convince people that you’re dedicated to one company but your actions clearly show you aren’t. You will never fully recognize true success with either if you’re trying to juggle both. Additionally, how selfish and unfair is that to your downline with Company A that you’re not fully supporting and coaching? Continue reading
I Heard Facebook Isn’t Very Secure
If you’re of the mindset that Facebook isn’t very secure – read on:
Everyday millions of users across the globe access Facebook. Facebook’s mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected. It’s a great social outlet as well as platform to build, maintain or grow a business. Yet despite all the wonderful opportunities Facebook affords people from all walks of life, there is still a segment of people who aren’t on Facebook.
For those who aren’t on Facebook, the most common reason they tell me why they haven’t jumped in is because “I heard Facebook isn’t very secure.” To that I say – you are operating from a point of misinformation and/or misunderstanding. Out of all the places you can be on the web, Facebook is one of the most secure. Or it certainly can be one of the most secure social media sites – providing you edit your account and privacy settings so that no one has access to anything you post or do, unless you explicitly give permission.
No I didn’t drink the koolaid. I know of what I am speaking.
I recently attended a Conference on Crimes Against Women where I met with Genevieve Ovalle, who is a Law Enforcement Response Specialist for Facebook Security. I am more convinced than ever than FB is one of the most secure social networking sites you can be on. Again, let me say that if you’ve heard horror stories about personal information getting out, it’s most likely because the user did not properly protect his/her personal information with the privacy and account settings or he/she just merely willingly shared far too much than the public needed to know. Secret to my Success
Want to know the secret to my direct sales success?
It’s been said many times before that if you want to achieve success, find someone in the same field, and do what they do or what they have done. That doesn’t necessarily mean you need to clone and plagiarize everything they’ve done, but if you follow their blueprint then chances are pretty favorable that you too can realize similar successes.
I’ve been in direct sales on and off since the 1980s. I’ve been with Scentsy Wickless since 2006 and have been a Superstar Director (the top rank) for a few years. It hasn’t been easy and there were many times that I have wanted to quit. But alas I’m still here. And I’ll share the secret to my success with you: Continue reading
